Guitar Maintenance and Care
Proper care and maintenance of your guitar are essential to preserving its instrument quality, longevity, and playing comfort. Below is a basic care guide for both acoustic and electric guitars:
1. Proper Storage
-
Always store your guitar in a hard case or gig bag when not in use.
-
Avoid storing your guitar in areas with extreme temperatures or high humidity.
-
Avoid Direct Airflow: Don’t place your guitar near vents or in direct line with an AC unit.
-
Use a Hygrometer: Monitor the temperature and humidity where your guitar is stored.
-
Use silica gel packs or a humidifier inside the case to maintain optimal humidity levels (45–55%).
2. Regular Cleaning
-
Clean the guitar body using a dry or slightly damp microfiber cloth (never use a wet cloth).
-
Use a recommended guitar-specific polish—do not use general household cleaning products.
-
Wipe down the strings after every use to prevent corrosion from sweat.
3. String and Fretboard Care
-
Replace strings regularly, depending on how often you play.
-
Apply lemon oil to rosewood or ebony fretboards 1–2 times per year.
-
Avoid using oil on maple fretboards and clear coat finish fretboard.
4. Periodic Setup
-
Perform routine setups including truss rod adjustments, intonation, and string action—especially after significant weather changes.
-
For optimal results, consult an authorized Markland Guitarworks technician.
5. Hardware and Electronics Check
-
Ensure tuning machines, bridge, and input jack are properly tightened and clean.
-
Check solder joints and potentiometers to prevent unwanted noise or signal issues.
6. Travel Storage
-
Use a hard case with dense foam padding when traveling long distances.
-
Never leave your guitar inside a closed vehicle (car trunk) for extended periods with extreme heat or low temperature.
